The Raspberry Beret is a catchy little frozen cocktail named after a catchy little song. It’s sweet and creamy and delicious – perfect as a dessert substitute.

It’s also a lot of fun during summer, anytime you want to cool down with something that’s over the top, exciting and goofy all at the same time – you know, like the 80s.

It’s not obligatory to listen to Prince’s “Raspberry Beret” while blending this drink, but it probably isn’t a bad idea.

Tasting Notes

On the nose you’ll first notice berry notes and a hint of vanilla from the liqueurs. The first sip gives you strong raspberry flavor from the Chambord. Then the hints of chocolate and vanilla in the creamy base that is Baileys.

Vodka adds some warmth without adding any real flavor. The little bit of grenadine brings extra sweetness and a slightly syrupy cherry-raspberry note that deepens the color and rounds the edges.

The blended ice gives it a slushy feel. It’s thick enough to coat your mouth without feeling syrupy. The whipped cream top adds a little more sweetness while the sugared rim adds a crunchy pop to offset the drink’s overall creaminess. It’s more like a boozy frozen dessert than a classic cocktail – sweet, rich, and easy to enjoy.

Equipment & Glassware

You don’t need much gear, but the right equipment makes the drink easier and lifts the presentation.

  • Blender: you’ll need a standard countertop blender with a pulse function. If you make frozen cocktails often, a more powerful blender (like a high-speed model) gives a silkier texture.
  • Martini glass or coupe: The classic presentation is a chilled martini glass. A coupe also looks elegant and holds the whipped cream and garnishes nicely. For a more casual feel, serve in a stemless martini glass.
  • Fine mesh strainer (optional): If you add fresh purée or muddled fruit, strain to remove seeds for a cleaner finish.
  • Cocktail tools for garnish: Small offset spatula or piping bag for whipped cream, shallow dish for rimming sugar, and a spoon for layering grenadine if you want a color gradient.

Chill the glass in the freezer for at least 10 minutes before serving. That keeps the slush from melting too quickly and preserves the thick texture.

When to Serve

This drink is a dessert cocktail through and through. It’s ideal after dinner when you want something sweet and fun, replacing cake or pastry. It’s also great for summer barbecues, pool parties, bridal showers, and birthday gatherings where a playful drink is what you want.

Serve it when guests are in the mood for something lighthearted rather than boozy or bitter. Because it’s sweet, it pairs well with salty snacks and lighter mains like prosciutto-wrapped melon, small cheese boards, or fried finger foods.

Which Liquor Brands to Choose

Small differences in brand can affect flavor. Here are reliable choices for each component.

  • Vodka: Choose a neutral, clean vodka like Tito’s, Smirnoff, or Absolut. If you have a preferred brand, that’ll work too!
  • Chambord: Chambord is the best choice to pair with Baileys, but you could swap a different raspberry liqueur or crème de framboise.
  • Baileys Irish Cream: Original Baileys works well. For a lighter texture, try Baileys Almande (almond-based) for a dairy-free option. Other brands like Carolans have a little stronger caramel flavor, but should still be delicious.
  • Grenadine: Use a good-quality grenadine with real pomegranate or fruit base. Try Liber & Co. or even make your own grenadine.
  • Whipped toppings: Canned whipped cream is convenient; fresh-made whipped cream gives better texture and less stabilizer taste.
