The Strawberry Margarita adds a strong dose of strawberry puree to the traditional margarita flavors of lime and orange. The tart and sweet flavors balance each other in a way that’s just right.

And you can play with different ratios on each ingredient to get the exact flavor you want. This is a fairly sweet drink that’s great as a summertime cocktail – a wonderful choice to serve at a barbecue.

It’s also terrific for anytime you wish it was summer.

Choosing the Right Strawberries

The flavor of this drink really depends on the strawberries. Fresh berries give the brightest taste when they’re in season.

Look for strawberries that are deep red all the way through, not pale in the center. If they smell like strawberries from a foot away, you’re on the right track.

Frozen strawberries are a solid option the rest of the year. They’re usually picked at peak ripeness and frozen fast, which locks in flavor.

Let them thaw slightly before pureeing so your blender doesn’t struggle. If you’re using a store‑bought puree, check the label. Some brands add a lot of sugar, which can throw off the balance of the drink.

If you want a smoother texture, strain the puree through a fine mesh sieve to remove seeds. It’s not required, but it does make the margarita feel more polished.

Tequila Choices and Flavor Impact

Tequila plays a bigger role than many people expect. A blanco tequila gives the cleanest, brightest flavor and lets the strawberry and lime shine. Reposado adds light vanilla and oak notes, which can be nice if you want something a bit richer.

Skip tequilas labeled “mixto.” They often have a harsher edge that shows up in blended drinks. Look for bottles that say 100 percent blue agave. You don’t need the most expensive option, but a decent mid‑range bottle makes a noticeable difference.

If you’re serving a crowd, it’s worth sticking with a consistent tequila so every glass tastes the same.

Make It Ahead for a Party

You can prep this margarita ahead of time, which is a lifesaver for parties. Blend everything except the ice and store it in a sealed pitcher in the fridge for up to 24 hours. When you’re ready to serve, blend the mix with fresh ice.

If you want to freeze it, pour the mixture into a freezer‑safe container and freeze until slushy. Stir or re‑blend before serving. Frozen margaritas tend to separate a bit as they sit, so a quick stir helps.

Label the container if your freezer is shared. Bright pink drinks have a way of disappearing.

Serving with Food

You won’t be surprised to hear that this drink pairs wonderfully with chocolate. Double chocolate brownies are great choice, as are chocolate peanut butter brownies.

If you’ve ever had a peanut butter and strawberry jelly sandwich, you’ll know how great strawberry peanut butter can be together.

Creative Garnishes That Work

A whole strawberry on the rim is classic, but there are other easy options. A thin lime wheel adds color contrast and hints at the flavor inside.

A small skewer with strawberry and lime pieces looks festive without much effort.

For something different, try a light dusting of chili powder or Tajín on the rim mixed with sugar. The gentle heat plays well with the sweetness of the drink.

Avoid heavy garnishes that sink or fall off easily. Simple always works best here.

There’s one variation I love on this drink. You can leave out the simple syrup and rim the glass with sugar and strawberry juice.

You can just dip the glass in strawberry juice and then sugar – that’s my preferred method. Or you can mix sugar and strawberry juice together on a plate, and dip the glass into that. Either way you do it, it makes for a slightly less sweet drink.

Mocktail Version

It’s also possible to make a nonalcoholic version of this drink. You just leave out the tequila, and use a splash of orange juice instead of triple sec.

This keeps the flavor very true, but with no alcohol whatsoever. It’s a great mocktail for when you want the flavor, but not the alcohol.
