The Minted Mule was created by Pete Vasconcellos of The Penrose, New York City. If you love your Moscow Mules, this is one you really need to try. It features silver tequila, ginger beer, lime and Mezcal.

So in addition to that wonderful ginger flavor, you get hints of smoky and citrus notes and the result is a taste that’s similar to the Mule, but wonderfully more complex.

This is a great cocktail that goes with meals or on its own. It’s wonderful anytime you’re in the mood for ginger.

What’s Great About It

The Minted Mule keeps what you already love about the Moscow Mule, especially the lime and ginger beer, then swaps vodka for silver tequila and adds a float of mezcal. That one change gives the drink more character without making it fussy.

This is also a very quick cocktail. You don’t need to make syrup, muddle fruit, or prep anything ahead of time. Fresh lime juice is the biggest effort you need to make, and it’s worth it. Bottled lime juice tends to taste flat and bitter, while fresh lime gives the drink a bright snap.

The mezcal float is what makes this cocktail stand out. Since it sits on top at first, you get a little smoky aroma before each sip. As the drink sits, the mezcal slowly mixes in, so the flavor changes a bit from start to finish. That keeps it interesting.

It’s also easy to adjust. If you want a softer drink, use less mezcal or skip the float and stir in just a small splash. If you want more ginger bite, choose a stronger ginger beer. If you want it extra crisp, use plenty of ice and a chilled glass.

Flavor Profile

The first thing you’ll notice is the ginger beer. It brings fizz, sweetness, and that peppery ginger kick that makes mule-style drinks so refreshing. The lime juice cuts through that sweetness.

Silver tequila adds clean, grassy, slightly peppery notes. It works especially well with lime because those flavors are already common in tequila drinks like margaritas and palomas. In this cocktail, the tequila gives the drink more personality than vodka would.

The mezcal adds smoke, earthiness, and a dry finish. It doesn’t need to be strong or overpowering. A float is enough to add aroma and depth. If you’re new to mezcal, this is a nice way to try it because the ginger beer and lime help balance the smoke.

The mint garnish gives the drink a fresh scent, even though it isn’t muddled into the cocktail. Clap the mint leaves gently between your hands before adding them. That releases the oils and makes the garnish more noticeable. It’s a tiny step, but it works.

Pro Tips

Use a good ginger beer, not ginger ale. Ginger ale is usually sweeter and milder, while ginger beer has more bite. That stronger ginger flavor is what makes the drink work.

Don’t overdo the mezcal. A float should be a finishing touch, not the whole story. Start with about ¼ ounce if you’re unsure. You can always add a little more next time.

Chill the glass if you have time. Just place it in the freezer for a few minutes while you gather your ingredients. A colder glass keeps the bubbles lively and the drink crisp.

Use fresh mint that still looks bright and firm. Tired mint won’t add much aroma. If your mint is a little wilted, place the stems in cold water for a few minutes. It often perks back up.

When to Serve

The Minted Mule is a great warm-weather drink because it’s cold, fizzy, and refreshing. It fits right in at backyard cookouts, taco nights, summer parties, and casual dinners on the patio.

It also works well with food. Try it with grilled chicken, fish tacos, shrimp, pork carnitas, nachos, or spicy roasted vegetables. The lime and ginger cut through rich foods, while the mezcal plays nicely with grilled and smoky flavors.

This is a good cocktail for people who like margaritas but want something different. It’s also a fun choice for mule fans who are used to vodka or bourbon versions. The tequila and mezcal make it feel fresh without being hard to make.

For parties, you can prep the tequila and lime juice together ahead of time and keep it chilled. When it’s time to serve, shake with ice, pour, top with ginger beer, and add the mezcal float. Don’t add the ginger beer ahead of time, or it’ll lose its fizz.
